One of the important teaching points of our corporate and recreational 4WD courses is self recovery.  Self recovery means that you recover the vehicle without using equipment or another vehicle.  Self recovery techniques include rocking (making a track by moving back and forward to compress the dirt, mud or sand), adjusting tyre pressures and working the wheel.

Working the wheel requires an understanding of how a motor vehicles differential works.  It also requires an understanding of the composition and structure of the track you are driving on.

On our training days the participants learn these techniques and will achieve self recovery.  The value of be able to use self recovery techniques is that it removes the chance of injury or damage occurring when recovering a vehicle using equipment such as recovery straps, high lift jacks and shovels.
